Size It Right: The Ultimate Area Rug Placement Guide
An area rug can transform a room by pulling furniture together, adding warmth, and defining living spaces within an open layout. However, choosing the wrong size is a common design misstep. A rug that is too small makes a space feel fragmented, while one that is too large can overwhelm the architecture. Choosing the right dimensions creates balance and flow throughout your home.
Living Rooms: Anchoring Your Seating
In the living room, your area rug serves as the anchor for your conversation area. The golden rule is simple: aim to have at least the front legs of all major furniture pieces—sofas, armchairs, and side tables—resting on top of the rug. For larger rooms, an oversized rug that accommodates all four legs of every furniture piece creates a luxurious look. If space is tight, a smaller rug under just the coffee table works, provided it leaves an even border of bare floor around the perimeter.
Dining Rooms: Pulling Out the Chairs
Functionality takes center stage in the dining room. Your rug must extend far enough past the edge of the dining table to keep chair legs on the rug even when guests pull them out to sit down. As a general rule, add 24 inches to all sides of your dining table measurements. This prevents chair legs from catching on the rug’s edge, avoiding trips and keeping the fabric flat.
Bedrooms: Morning Comfort Underfoot
There is nothing quite like stepping out of bed onto a soft, plush surface. In the bedroom, place a large rug horizontally under the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending at least 18 to 24 inches on either side. Alternatively, for smaller bedrooms or runner arrangements, placing twin runners along both sides of the bed offers symmetry and comfort without covering the entire subfloor.
Protect Your Investment with a Quality Rug Pad
Regardless of the room, never skip the rug pad. A quality pad prevents slipping, provides additional cushioning, and protects both the underside of the rug and your primary flooring from wear and discoloration.
